Two Years in a Row Bring Victory in Budapest

10/03/2005

On Sunday October 2nd, Jackton Odhiambo Wassiema made the journey from his native Kenya to Hungary to win the 21st Annual Budapest Marathon for the second straight year in far from ideal running conditions, pulling away from fellow countryman Philip Kirui Kipnengo.

Jackton, who has been coached by Lowell Ladd for the past eight months, went in to this year's race not only hoping to win but to claim victory in a fast time. The two Kenyans sped through the half marathon split in 1:07, on pace for a solid time. But heavy rains and winds over the final 12km slowed the pace severely. Jackton managed to pull away from his competitor and win the race in a time that was over two minutes faster than last year in 2:22:01.
